Artisan toolholder

Date: 7/22/25 - 8/1/25

Objective: Create an appealing holder for assorted tools

Overview:

With this project I received a request from a friend to create a container that could hold an assortment of artist’s pens for easy access. Although that specific design was embellished with features unique to them (not pictured), the overall design is flexible for many professional crafts tools.

Constraints:

  1. Create a simple container that gives my friend easy access to their tools
  2. The container should be aesthetically appealing
  3. The container should be simple and easy to print

The Design:

The overall design was simple to print, and I believe reasonably appealing and modern. One key addition I made is the tray – a shallow curved receptacle which offers a convenient place to stow high-use or oddly shaped implements. Although I printed a full-sized holder for my friend to make use of, a scaled-down print of the design serves as a handy container for some simple engineering tools at my desk.

Two minor details that add greatly to the overall feel of the holder is the weight distribution and lack of supports. The weight distribution is what makes the holder stable and pleasing to handle, so I ensured there would be enough material at the base of the holder. The lack of supports is simple yet important, allowing these to be printed and used immediately without any processing. As with most 3D printers, overhanging angles of 45 degrees or greater allows walls to be printed without support, so I ensured no part of this design overhangs any sharper.
