Everything you see - Made by Me
The IKEA Klämmemacka is a simple wooden toolbox with two lid compartments hinging over the top of a larger bin. The simple design leaves plenty of room for improvement however, so with this design I attempted to remedy two of what I see as shortcomings: The exposed holes on the upper compartments, and the lack of security in the hinged opening.
The design for these upgrades were split into two: the hole covers, and the handle attachment. The hole covers were my primary concern as I intended to keep my toolbox in a dusty environment where pests might reside. The end design was a simple press-fit cover that securely clamps onto the lid part, while a small detente on the side offers the necessary grip to pull the lid off. The design also had the unintended benefit of enhancing the security of the lids, by making the wooden lid fit more snugly.
The handle attachment was more of an exercise in ergonomic design, with me needing to consider allowances for finger and knuckle fit, as well as the attachment to the existing handle. The design restricts the opening of the toolbox to one side first, similar to some double-door designs. While I’m not entirely satisfied with the ergonomics of the handle (some motions cause the knuckle to brush against the wood), a spot check of my time investment led me to decide that the design would suffice for a mostly stationary toolbox.
